Why getting involved and putting your hand up is important (from a former Duffy kid)

Meet Caitlin Jackson from Auckland

.

What are you doing/where are now?

As a kid I thought I’d end up being a librarian as I was an avid book reader and was the Head Librarian at my high school for the year. I currently work in healthcare as a Medical Receptionist and I enjoy doing the best I can to help my community.

What’s your journey to where you are now?

I went to a Duffy school for primary school and I always liked reading. My favourite part of the Duffy Books in Homes programme was the books – I’d get together with friends in my class and we’d figure out what books we were ordering, so we didn’t order the same ones. Once the books arrived, we’d read the books we ordered, then share and swap them with friends so we always had extra books to read. I definitely credit reading, getting involved and putting my hand up for opportunities for where I am today.

What was your favourite book and what book do you recommend people read?

My favourite book series when I was at school was ‘Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief’. I read all the books in the series starting in primary school through to high school. At the moment, I’m currently reading the second book of ‘The Fourth Wing’ series and really enjoying it. It’s a dragon fantasy series with a smattering of romance and I’d recommend the series.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give kids today?

Pick it up and give it a go – it’s okay if you don’t end up liking it but give it a go. Just keep going and trying new things – it might not happen the first time but it’s the pushing and perseverance that’s key, as well as how you bounce back that shows your true character.
